What Rihanna did is more than Fenty.

So this Fall, Rihanna shook the cosmetics world by releasing Fenty, her new cosmetics company. The company was founded on the ideals of inclusivity, diversity, and makeup for all.

 

I’m fairly dark skinned, so the amount of companies who just don’t support dark skin or dark skin girls wearing foundation or concealer was ridiculous.

 

Then, Rihanna came along. She released forty shades of foundation that works for so many damn people and the world rejoiced. Videos of people trying the darkest shades and the lightest shades were rampant. People were crying with joy. People finally felt like the beauty and cosmetics industry gave a shit about them. It was and continues to be magical.

 

Rihanna thought of all of us when she created her makeup line, but I don’t know if she planned for what happened post-fenty.

 

Post Fenty dropping, a bunch of companies noticed how consumers reacted to her products and how they were quite honestly abandoning the makeup companies and shades from those companies they were already using--people who had shades and who didn’t alike.

 

Companies like MakeupForever, made posts saying that they too were inclusive and had been all along.

 

Other companies started showcasing darker people wearing their colors whether it be eye makeup or lip colors, to show more inclusivity.

 

The most profound impact in my opinion, is the inclusivity now coming from companies.

 

Companies are truly noticing that everyone buys makeup regardless of skin tone. There isn’t one consumer market that is more profitable than another when based on skin tone.

 

As a result, we get news of companies like Kylie Cosmetics releasing thirty concealer shades from fair to “deep-dark”. I have no idea what “deep-dark” is or where it came from but regardless I imagine that’s where I fall on the spectrum.

 

Now, Kylie Cosmetics could have been developing this before Fenty made waves, but I do think it’s interesting how all of a sudden makeup companies are going out of their way to showcase makeup for everyone.

 

Rihanna didn’t just make an amazing makeup brand and company. She didn’t just create foundations and colors for everyone. She didn’t just have inclusive marketing.

 

Rihanna started a new wave of inclusivity within the entire beauty industry. She made a point that dark skin women specifically (speaking to my experience) buy makeup. If there is a such thing as a beauty activist, that’s Rihanna through and through.

 

More companies are acknowledging us now and acknowledging us fast.

 

More companies are showcasing us in their marketing and campaigns.

 

They see us. They’re now marketing to us. They’re treating us equally.
